Local Liberal Democrats have welcomed a scheme that allows free use of public swimming pools and gyms during off-peak times. The scheme is open to all Birmingham residents with a Leisure Card and includes swimming, group exercise classes and gym sessions. The Be Active scheme runs until 31 March 2011 and is part-funded by the NHS in Birmingham, who are working together with the Lib Dem partnership City Council. The aim is to improve the health of all Birmingham residents. "This is great news for everyone who lives in Birmingham, especially those hit by the recession who would otherwise have missed out on using leisure facilities," said Selly Oak Councillor Alistair Dow. Anyone who wants to join the scheme will need a Leisure Card (see www.birmingham.gov.uk/leisurecard). You can complete an application form and take it to your local leisure centre along with two documents showing your name and address. Subject to certain exceptions, Be Active includes:
